Performance art has historically been considered a fringe art form in China. Since the early 21st century, Chinese contemporary art entered the global stage and enjoyed a brief period of openness, yet performance art has never received official funding and has relied solely on the passion and persistence of individual artists. In recent years, cultural policies have become increasingly restrictive, making the creation and presentation of performance art ever more difficult. This is precisely why Cai Qing has devoted himself to documenting these unacknowledged, unsupported, and even banned artistic creations in both Chinese and English, introducing them to a wider audience. 行为艺术在中国一直是个边缘艺术，80–90年代处于地下状态，21世纪初中国当代艺术正式步入国际舞台时，曾有过一段较为开放的时期。在中国，行为艺术从来得不到资金赞助，只能依靠艺术家个人的热情与坚持。近几年文化政策一再收紧，审查制度使得艺术家的创作与展示举步维艰，尤其是行为艺术与实验电影等。这也正是蔡青坚持以中英文编辑、写作，将这些不被尊重、没有支持甚至被“禁止”的艺术创作的生命历程记录下来并介绍给世人的意义所在。
